Common home security mistakes

Security is our business at Mike B. Therefore, it might come as no surprise to you that we find it hard to believe that some people still treat home security with little or no respect. We’ve witnessed the worst cases of security neglect over the years, visiting homes where customers have failed to put the very basic measures in place to prevent their houses being burgled.

In many instances, people react way after the event. By this time it’s usually a little too late, the damage has already been done, valuables have been stolen and damage has been inflicted on the home.

Unbelievably, in most cases avoiding action could have been taken to prevent break-ins at home, we outline some of the most common mistakes households make when it comes to security.

Classic Home Security Mistakes

Popping to local shops

Run out of milk and what’s the first thing you do? If you get along with your neighbour you might nip next door, or pop to the local shop to stock up on supplies. This should only take a few minutes, so why bother locking your door, you’ll be back before you know it, and everything will be fine! Except it won’t, especially if an opportunistic thief clocks you leaving the house then decides to chance their luck.

Lesson: Lock doors whenever you leave the house

Leaving downstairs windows open

It’s summer, it’s boiling, you’re going out for a while, but can’t face the thought of coming home to a baking hot house.  The simple solution is to leave windows open so air can circulate around the property during your absence – surely that’s not a security risk? Don’t be fooled into thinking thieves won’t use this point of entry. Downstairs windows are one of the most likely access points for burglars.

Lesson: Close and lock windows before you walk out of the property

Failing to fit security devices

Unbelievably there are still a significant amount of homes in the UK that have little or no security measures in place.  The cases differ, from domestic homes having no burglar alarms fitted, to households that have basic locks or inadequate security measures. This is easy pickings for professional burglars.

Lesson: Assess current security measures, upgrade if needs be

Leaving home unattended on key dates

Finally, if you always go out on Bonfire Night, like to visit the in-laws on Christmas Day, or regularly go for a meal on Valentine’s Day, this is also an open invite for criminals. Burglars target homes on key dates throughout the year, and most homeowners don’t give this a second thought.

Lesson: Check home security before going out, leave lights on to make the property look occupied
